The Galway sheep was introduced to Great Britain in 1990 by the import of a selection from seven of the top flocks in the West of Ireland, where, though the pedigree population is low, the Galway breed plays an important role in commercial sheep production.

Closely related to Robert Bakewell's improved Dishley Leicester, large numbers of which were exported to Ireland in the 18th century, the Galway is a large, polled, white-faced breed noted for:

Prolificacy - The best managed flocks can achieve 200% lambing

Longevity - The ewe shown above is the produce of a ten year-old ewe

Good growth rate and ease of finishing

  Excellent carcase & eating quality

  Fine quality wool

  Hardiness & ease of management

The Galway sheep is a sensible breed, developed by practical farmers, free from fancy breed points, and designed for profit.

The Galway is developing three roles in Great Britain:

Bred pure for finished lamb production - Produce quality lambs & reduce your flock replacement costs

As the sire of a cross-bred ewe from hill breeds - Buy an economically priced ram that will last, produce a bigger gimmer with more shape, and forget problems finishing ram lambs

As the dam of a cross-bred ewe by a Suffolk or Texel ram - Produce a good, big ewe with conformation and mothering ability, with the bonus of top class finished wether lambs
